The Department of Cornea and Refractive Surgery was founded in 2010.
Faculty experts and team
Prof Zhao Shaozhen, now in charge of the department, is a doctoral supervisor and deputy director of Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital. Committee member of Refractive and Corneal Disease Group of Chinese Ophthalmology Society. Member of the standing committee of Tianjin Ophthalmology Society. Member of Asian Dry Eye Society. Committee member of Ophthalmology subdivision of Association of Medical Exchanges across the Taiwan straits. Deputy Director of popular science branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Ophthalmology Association. Prof Zhao is a renown Cornea and Refractive Surgery specialist with more than 30 years’clinical experience. She has completed more than 3,000 ocular surface and corneal transplantation surgery, more than 40,000 refractive procedures and 30,000 cataract surgeries. She specializes in various corneal transplantation, high myopia refractive surgery and treatment of difficult ocular surface diseases.
Prof Zhao was supported by more than 10 government-funded research projects including 5 National Natural Science Foundation and published more than 100 scientific articles including more than 30 SCI articles, who has coedited more than 10 ophthalmologic monographs and be served as an expert in the evaluation of the National Natural Science Foundation. The second prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award and the third prize of China Medical Science and Technology were awarded. More than 80 graduate students are trained. She has won excellent teacher awards and Tianjin May 1st Labor Medal, etc.
Clinical work and scientific research
A lot of complicated and difficult cases of keratitis, keratoconus, pterygium, dry eye and diabetic ocular surface diseases, refractive error, cataract were diagnosed and treated. Until now，more than 1000 PKP surgeries were performed successfully. The first corneal endothelium transplantation surgery and deep lamellar keratoplasty with femtosecond laser and artificial cornea transplantation were performed in Tianjin. As the most important support, the Eye Bank of TMUEH was established in 2001 following the U.S. Eye Bank Medical Standards to ensure consistent high levels of donor quality, proficiency, and ethics in dealing with ocular tissue for transplantation. In addition, more than 1000 intraocular lens implantation surgeries with phakic eyes were performed for high myopia patients who were not suitable for laser treatment.
The department of refractive and corneal diseases has made outstanding achievements in clinical and basic research. In recent years, we have very close cooperation with a lot of famous international ophthalmology institutions all over the world for training and communication. |
